Moreland Veterinary Hospital offers comprehensive dental exams and cutting edge ultrasonic cleanings, scaling and polishing to both prevent and treat dental problems for cats and dogs.

According to the American Veterinarian Dental Society, more than 70% of cats and 80% of dogs develop gum disease by the age of three. The oral health of your pet has a profound impact on the animal's general health. Tartar and plaque build-up can cause infections, bad breath, gum inflammation and eventually tooth loss. Bacteria and toxins caused by periodontal disease may enter the blood stream causing systemic diseases and wreaking havoc on internal organs.

We cannot stress how important it is to have an oral hygiene regimen in place for your pet at an early age. We recommend:

  1. Brush your pets' teeth regularly with toothpaste and brush formulated for animals.
  2. Keep your pet's mouth active with certain chew toys and avoid soft foods in their diet.
  3. Pay attention to your pet's breath. Although we think it is common place, stinky dog or cat breath can be the sign of more serious problems.
  4. Regular dental check-ups - the frequency will vary as we assess the individual pet's needs on a case by case basis.
